3 Powerful Signs to Live Out Your God-Sized Goals

As we are entering the new year, many people have their goals for 2025 on their minds. Do you ever fear that they are too big, though? As an enneagram type 7, this happens to me a lot!

How do we know if they are from God? What should God-sized goals look like? Let’s dive deep into the word and see if we can’t untangle this mystery together!

God-Sized Goals Should Push You Out of Your Comfort Zone

I decided to become a teacher in December 2009. As a mother of a toddler and an almost school-aged child who moved frequently to find good jobs in the poor economy, I had no idea how to get there. The only thing I understood was I needed to go to college.

It took seven years to get there, but in 2016, I found myself in front of my first group of high schoolers. There were some bumps in the road, but I realized then that God had taken that scared young mom and got her to the place where her girls were more grown and she was more capable of handling older teens.

I always want to ensure we have biblical examples of God-sized goals, so let’s talk about Moses. He was so scared of what he was doing that he “pleaded ‘Lord, please send anyone else'” (Exodus 4: 13). Yet, Moses went on to do miraculous things, alongside his brother Aaron.

God-Sized Goals Give Us a Vision

For about seven months after Brandon died, people would ask me what my plans were for the shop he had built. I was completely honest with them and told them that I had no idea and it was not a priority at the moment (after all, I had one house to finish and one house to prep for sale).

As I am singing in church, not thinking about anything except worship, I hear, “Create an event center.” So that is what I am doing!

This also means that we must be great stewards of where we are today. This is something I am being very intentional about in 2025. How am I spending my time? Is it in alignment with who I want to be in the future and who I am today?

A great biblical example of God-sized goals is Ester, who continued to do what she was asked in order to follow God’s plan for her life. To go from being a Jewish orphan to the Queen is quite the feat! Yet it’s because of her simple acts of faith, such as “accepting the advice of Hegai, the eunuch in charge of the harem. She asked for nothing except what he suggested and was admired by everyone who saw her.” (Ester 2:15)

God-Sized Goal: Focus on the Process, Not the Results

Have you ever had a goal in mind and found that the ending is not what you wanted- but even better? Was all the time spent focusing on the original goal still worth your time? Did it provide you with great memories along the way? That’s what I mean when I say focus on the process, not the results.

A key factor is whether it gives you joy- even in hard times. Do you know in your gut that this is what you should be doing? When I was a teacher, I would have bad days. What surprised me was how I was always excited to get up and go to work the next day. That never happened when I worked in the food industry!

There are so many great biblical examples of God-sized goals I could give here. Job was the first one that came to my mind. After losing everything, God blessed him with more than he lost.

Then there is Paul, who thought his life mission was to persecute the Christians but ended up becoming one of them and had a much fuller life because of it.

The example I will quote, though, is the twelve disciples. The brothers Simon Peter and Andrew were simple fishermen, and Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Come, follow me, and I will make you fishers of men!” (John 4:19).

Wrapping Up This Part of God-Sized Goals

I will be completely honest: this was a God-sized goal for me. It’s a small one for many but a big one for me. I have wanted to share my faith in this way for a long time, but I had so many doubts. At the same time, I longed to go deeper into my bible.

This morning I have done both. And it has me on fire!

Now that we know what God-sized goals are, we need to understand the difference between our goals and God’s goals for our lives.
